Tiger Woods and Major Championships Not Getting Along in 2009

When you hear Tiger Woods and major championship in the same sentence you might as well go ahead and add victory to the end of it. But so far in 2009 it has been a different story.

It began at the Masters where Tiger saw his first action in a major since returning from his knee injury. Even though it was only his fourth tournament of the season, Woods was easily the odds on favorite as he was looking for his fifth green jacket and continued dominance of the beautiful Augusta National. After four rounds of inconsistant play and a back and forth battle with Phil Mickelson, Tiger fell four shots short of champion Angel Cabrera but it was only the first of the four majors and you just knew Bethpage Black and the U.S. Open would be his time to reign supreme once again.

So there we were at the course where Tiger pretty much dominated back in 2002 and the same was expected again until rain and more rain turned the tournament upside down. After numerous rain delays and suspensions of play Tiger made a roaring charge on a Monday finish but it wasn’t enough as he brought home his second straight tie for sixth place in a major.
Now normally any other golfer on the known planet would take two straight top ten’s in a major and go home happy but for the world’s number one, and probably the greatest golfer of all time(even though Jack has more majors 18-14), it definitely is not the result he is looking for. “I’ve put myself in position to win the first few majors. I just haven’t done it.”

Now here we are after a disappointing opening round of one over 71 at the British Open and Tiger could be on his way to a third straight major without a win. He is six shots off the lead, which is not a lot, but the bigger number is how many golfers are in front of him. He is currently tied for 68th and the weather is only supposed to get worse as the week goes along.

Yes this seems like we are being too harsh on Mr. Woods but it is his fault for making us come to expect these dominant performances from him. And even after all of the negative discussion that has been said we know it will only take one thing for us to say and he will be right back to adding to his major titles. “It’s Tiger Woods.”
