When you talk about a top ten NFL Draft pick trying to negotiate a contract then of course you know it may take some time. But not many times do you hear it may take a whole entire season. Well it sounds like that is what Michael Crabtree is ready to do.
According to Crabtree’s cousin and advisor David Wells, Crabtree is not happy with the way negotiations are going with the San Francisco 49ers and that the wide receiver could sit out the entire season and re-enter the NFL Draft in 2010. But when you talk to Crabtree’s agent Eugene Parker he is completely shocked from this announcement. “I’m not a guy who makes threats,” Parker said. “Nor am I a guy who negotiates in the public. I don’t know where this came from but no such threat has been made.”
Crabtree was the tenth overall selection in the draft and after seeing the Oakland Raiders give Darius Howard-Bey 38 million they definitely do not think that the 49ers are close. Crabtree was listed as probably the best wide receiver in this draft but has been trying to get over a foot injury that he had to deal with in the offseason. Crabtree has been seen at the 49ers headquarters rehabbing the foot but has not participated in any kind team drills.
Only time will tell what Crabtree will decide to do. If he decides to sit out the season and wait for next year’s draft then we are definitely talking about setting a precedent. The 49ers can’t be happy about hearing this news and this upcoming week seems crucial in trying to get a deal done. Will we see Crabtree catching passes on Sunday this season? Or will we be talking about his draft stock for the 2010 NFL Draft?
